Can these numbers be used to buy anything?
No. These numbers pass the Luhn checksum — the same arithmetic check real card numbers satisfy — but they aren't issued against any real account, so no payment processor will authorize a charge against them.
What is the Luhn check, and why does it matter?
It's a simple checksum built into every real card number, used to catch typos before a number is even sent to a processor. Test data that fails this check would get rejected by client-side validation before your backend logic is even exercised — so generated numbers here always pass it.
What should I actually use this for?
Testing checkout form validation, UI layout with realistic-looking data, or database seeding — anywhere you need something shaped like a card number without touching a real payment network. Most payment processors (Stripe, PayPal, etc.) also publish their own dedicated sandbox test numbers, which are the right choice once you're testing an actual integration.
